Hail, damaging winds forecast for Victoria

Victorians are set to shiver as a weekend cold front moves across the state, bringing damaging winds, possible hail and snow down to 500 metres.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts Melbourne will feel the "full brunt" of the front, moving from the southwest from late Friday night through to Sunday, with gusts up to 100km/h, showers, and possible hail and thunder.

"That means we're likely to see some snow falls on the top of the Otway Ranges, also the Strzelecki Ranges and close to Melbourne," forecaster Dean Stewart said on Friday.

He added that snow as low as 500 metres was expected for the Dandenong Ranges on Sunday.

"Back in 2008 ... (Mt Dandenong) did receive a covering of a few centimetres on the ground and that may result again this weekend."

(There's) also a slight chance we'll see some snow on the hills around Ballarat as well as around places like Trentham."

Melbourne is expected to hit 14C on Saturday and 11C on Sunday.
