The accountant of former mining magnate Joseph Gutnick has been grilled in the witness box over the businessman's $275 million bankruptcy before Gutnick and his family's court appearance next week.

The Federal Court has summoned a number of people including Gutnick, his wife Stera and son Mordechai as well as Gutnick's business associates to give evidence as part of a probe into the financial affairs of the former Melbourne Football Club president, who declared bankruptcy last July.

Registrar Timothy Luxton is overseeing the examination, conducted by trustees Pitcher Partners, which on Thursday heard evidence from Gutnick's accountant, Peter Stegelman.
