Greens push for Victorian plastic bag ban

Victoria's Greens are pressing ahead with their bill to ban single-use plastic bags, concerned nothing is being done while other states make the change.

Waste spokeswoman Nina Springle says she will bring her private member's bill to a vote in October, saying the Andrews government "can't continue to ignore these issues".

"Will they support our bill to stop plastic pollution at the source, or allow bags to keep flowing into waterways to kill marine life and birds?" she asked.

Environment Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said in a statement: "We look forward to making an announcement soon."

The Greens bid comes after Western Australia moved to get rid of the bags from July 2018.
