The Greens have pledged tax breaks for people who invest in community-owned power companies - allowing renewable energy to be taken up by apartment dwellers and renters.

Any income derived from investment in community run power companies will be tax free - although capped to stop people abusing it, Greens MP Adam Bandt told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday.

"If you live in a flat where you might not own your roof space or you rent, you can invest in a community-owned power company."
