Grandmother turns 100 on Anzac Day

As Australian troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915, Gert White's mother was in labour in a Victorian hospital.

And now on the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day, Gert is celebrating her own centenary.

It will be both a celebration and time for remembrance for Gert, whose husband served in the AIF during World War II.

Born in Geelong on April 25, 1915, Elsie Gertrude White worked as a typist before marrying Ronald in 1938.

Mr White, who died in 1988, served as a Captain and 9th Division engineer.

"We always think of him and the ones who didn't come home," daughter Barbara Ramsdale said.

One of Gert's grandsons will be marching with her husband's medals on Saturday as the family reflect on the sacrifice he made for his country.

But Gert's birthday hasn't been forgotten.

Family are travelling from as far away as the US for a celebration with Gert and her five children.

Her nursing home will also pull out all the stops with a special morning tea to honour the centenarian.

"She has lots of friends in the home. We love the staff there and are thrilled they are making the effort to celebrate this occasion," Ms Ramsdale said.

Gert is in good health and her daughter says she still has a great sense of humour.
