Man remains in hospital after driving van into home

A Victorian man will be interviewed by police after driving a van into his own home, setting both on fire, north-west of Melbourne overnight.

Police say the red van hit the Golden Gully home near Bendigo about 9pm, with an electrical fault at the property believed to have set the vehicle on fire.

Firefighters arrived in time to stop the fire spreading to the front of the home, which was undergoing renovations.

"The fire did get into the roof, so it went right through the ceiling space. As a result some (of the property) has collapsed so is uninhabitable," Chris Jacobsen from the CFA said.

As flames charred the car and the back of the weather-board home, its 43-year-old driver fled on foot.

He later returned to the scene, where he was arrested by police and taken to hospital for an assessment.

Investigators are yet to interview the 43-year-old about this incident.

A woman, aged in her 30s, is believed to have been inside at the time.

She was limp as paramedics loaded her onto a stretcher, but had no obvious injuries and later refused to be taken to hospital.

The property remains cordoned off and guarded by police.

The driver has been charged with separate assault offences.

No charges have been laid in relation to last night's fire.
