Toddler, man rescued from Melbourne blaze
Fire crews had to use a ladder to rescue a man and a toddler from a second storey balcony after flames engulfed the top level of a home.
"I dread to think what might have happened if that balcony wasn't there," Epping CFA captain Rob Saitta said.
An 11-year-old girl suffered burns to her hands in the same blaze in Epping about 3am on Monday.
The man and child were among six people treated at the scene by paramedics while the 11-year-old was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital with minor burns to her hands.
It took crews from 14 engines more than an hour to put out the fire, which completely gutted the home's top storey.
The fire is not believed to be suspicious but the cause is still being investigated, the CFA say.
