Former Vic govt adviser faces charges

Charges against a former Victorian coalition government adviser are having a significant impact on his life, a court has heard.

Tristan James Weston is charged with engaging in legal practice in 2014 while not being a qualified lawyer.

The 44-year-old, who was an adviser to former deputy premier Peter Ryan, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

His lawyer, Michael McNamara, asked police to hand over all subpoenaed materials tied to the case.

Weston is accused of accompanying an accused person to a police interview in January 2014, and told officers he was that person's lawyer.

Weston also allegedly asked police for evidence in a theft matter and acted as an instructor for a barrister during a hearing, court documents say.

Mr McNamara said the charges were having a significant impact on Weston.

"He's stuck with this for an awfully long time," he said.

It was "ridiculous" that police had failed to provide defence with all material relating to Weston's case, Mr McNamara said.

The Legal Services Board has charged Weston with two counts each of engaging in legal practice and representing an entitlement to engage in legal practice while not being an Australian legal practitioner.

It was adjourned to July 13.
