Former Vic education big wig to face court

A Victorian education department big wig and four others have been charged over an alleged multimillion-dollar schools rort.

Former Victorian education department finance manager Nino Napoli is due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on January 24 after the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission's investigation.

IBAC said the investigation focused on allegations senior departmental officers misappropriated funds from the department's budget using false and inflated invoices.

They also allegedly arranged payment of excessive hospitality, travel and personal items.

IBAC in 2015 looked at claims of serious alleged corruption within the education department between 2007 and 2014, and the commission's report into the matter was tabled in parliament last year.

The report found at least $1.9 million was channelled to relatives and associates of Mr Napoli between 2007 and 2014.

It also raised suspicions over a further $1.1 million in transactions and $3.3 million worth of contracts with the true figures likely to be much higher.

Napoli's cousin Carlo Squillacioti and former school principal Michael Giulieri are also listed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 24, while two others will appear at a later date.
