Arson suspected in destructive Vic blazes

The occupants of two cars, including one displaying learner's plates, are being sought over a deliberately-lit fire that destroyed a house in central Victoria.

It was the second of two destructive fires in as many days that police say were deliberately lit.

Detectives are investigating the 105-hectare grass fire which began at Edgecombe, north of Kyneton, on Tuesday afternoon and quickly burned out of control.

Victoria Police on Wednesday said they were treating that fire as suspicious, making it the second deliberately-lit fire in as many days.

One house was destroyed before the blaze on Tuesday was contained, but no one was injured.

That fire is now under control and fire crews remain at the scene.

Cool and wet conditions overnight have supported efforts to douse the fire, the CFA says.

Police say an older Mercedes Benz with L-plates and a white sedan were seen in the area at the time of the fire, and they are keen to speak with the occupants to see if they witnessed anything suspicious.

A separate fire at Crib Point on the Mornington Peninsula on Monday was also deliberately lit, police say.

That fire burnt down the home of a 72-year-old woman, who was forced to flee to the beach.

Another house was also badly damaged in the Crib Point fire, as well as a garage and two sheds, before it was brought under control on Tuesday morning.

No charges have been laid in relation to either of the fires.
