Woman flung onto road in Melb crash

A critically injured driver who was flung out of her rolling car in Melbourne could not be found for 15 minutes because she had landed on a different freeway.

The Craigieburn woman, 28, was launched out of her sedan when it rolled on the Hume Freeway in Thomastown at 2.30am on Thursday.

It took paramedics 15 minutes to find the woman, as she was on the Metropolitan Ring Road, which passes over the Hume Freeway.

She is now in a critical condition in Royal Melbourne Hospital with extensive injuries including to her head, Ambulance Victoria said.

Northeast of Melbourne, a driver has died after a fiery crash between a car and a truck.

The vehicles burst into flames after the smash on the Maroondah Highway in Kanumbra just after 7am on Thursday.

Police are yet to release specific details such as the gender of the deceased driver or how the crash occurred.

The truck driver escaped with minor injuries.

A fire that spread to scrubland on the roadside has been contained by three fire crews, the CFA says.

The state's provisional road toll is at 85, 11 higher than the same time last year.
