Fewer Vic trains replaced with buses

Fewer trains will be replaced with buses on Victoria's regional train lines thanks to a new timetable.

Hundreds of services have been cancelled and replaced with slower buses since problems with wheels and boom gates hit in mid-January.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said 93 per cent of train services will run with trains from March 21.

Ms Allan said more than 300 wheels have been replaced since a problem with wear and tear was identified.

Victoria is also installing axle counters at boom gates after an incident where a boom gate didn't trigger properly when a V-Line train went through a suburban level crossing.

"The total cost of this issue won't be known until the final VLocity (train) has its wheels replaced," Ms Allan told reporters on Tuesday.

Victoria was spending more than $250,000 a day on replacement buses after V-Line was forced to cancel dozens of services a day.
