Family violence budget too low: Victoria

The federal budget's family violence measures barely cover the cost of the current national advertising campaign, Victoria's family violence minister says.

A $110 million family violence commitment was announced in Tuesday night's budget but it doesn't come close to the $572 million Victoria set aside after the state's family violence royal commission.

"An average $36 million investment over three years for the whole of Australia falls well short, and in fact barely covers, the cost of the current family violence national advertising campaign," Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson told parliament on Wednesday.

Victoria will spend $572 million over two years to implement 65 of the 227 recommendations made by the royal commission.

Ms Richardson said there had been hope the federal government would deliver more after a $100 million announcement in September, but the sector had been disappointed.

"Actions always speak louder than words," she said.

A vigil for those who lost their lives due to family violence will be held on Wednesday night at Federation Square.
