Victorian authorities have confiscated five properties with a combined value of more than $3 million from the family of a convicted drug trafficker.

Nam Son Nguyen was jailed in September 2015 and the state's Director of Public Prosecutions subsequently moved to seize four residential and one commercial property registered under the names of two family members, citing "unexplained wealth".

"The object of the unexplained wealth laws is to undermine the profitability of serious criminal activity," DPP John Champion SC said in a statement on Thursday following the County Court's rejection of a bid by the family to keep the real estate.
