The ex-wife of a man fatally stabbed in a Melbourne unit will be seen by a psychiatric nurse after fronting court charged with murder.

Police say emergency services were alerted by his ex-wife.

Nolan barely whispered "yes" when asked whether she understood the court process on Tuesday.

A legal aid lawyer said it was Nolan's first time in custody and asked that she be seen by a psychiatric nurse.

Police will lodge items for forensic analysis before Nolan returns to court on February 28.
