Fundraising efforts to help pay for the repatriation and funeral of Mount Everest climber Marisa Strydom has reached almost $24,000.

The 34-year-old Melbourne university lecturer died of altitude sickness on the way back down the mountain in her husband's arms on May 20.

Dr Strydom's sister Aletta Newman told AAP that her body was expected to arrive in Melbourne late on Tuesday as the family prepares to make funeral arrangements.

Money raised over the past seven days will help Dr Strydom's family cover costs associated with her death and the rest will be donated to charity.
