Endangered ducks killed on Vic wetlands

Hundreds of dead waterbirds, including rare and endangered species, have been laid outside Premier Daniel Andrews office in Melbourne.

The 810 birds, including 68 endangered freckled ducks, were shot and left to die on Victorian wetlands on the opening weekend of the duck shooting season.

Protesters placed the birds on white sheets outside the premier's office on Monday, the largest number of dead birds they have found in 31 years.

"We had warned the government that if there were threatened species like freckled and blue bill ducks on the wetland, they would be hit," Laurie Levy from the Coalition Against Duck Shooting said.

"And that's exactly what happened and one would expect the government to protect these birds."

Mr Levy said there are only about 20,000 freckled ducks left in Australia.
