Northeast Vic grass fire warning eased

Fire crews in northeast Victoria have stopped the spread of a grass fire that threatened lives and property in northeast Victoria.

An emergency warning was declared about 4.40pm on Tuesday for a grass fire at Leneva, south of Wodonga with residents in parts of Leneva and Leneva West warned to leave immediately before conditions worsened.

The warning has now been downgraded to watch and act level by the Country Fire Authority.

It says although the fire is not under control, firefighters have stopped it from spreading.

"Staying close to shelter is the safest option, in case conditions change again suddenly. Continue to stay informed and monitor conditions," the CFA said.

An advice message has been issued for nearby Baranduda and Staghorn Flat, warning that smoke will be visible to residents.

Thirty-two fire trucks have been rushed to the scene at the height of the blaze, which has now burned through 190 hectares.

The region was hit hard by a bushfire that began on December 20, which destroyed four homes and burned more than 7700 hectares in a large area just west of the new fire.
