A 98-year-old man who died in a fire in his Melbourne home used his personal medical alarm to call for help but it arrived too late to save him.

Paramedics were called to the Vaynor Street Niddrie home by a medical alarm that was activated at about 5.30am on Sunday.

When they arrived, they found the house on fire and called firefighters who brought the blaze under control and found the body of the man inside.

A police spokesman said the cause was deemed non-suspicious and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
