Early votes up in Victorian election

Victorians are flocking to early voting centres in record numbers.

The state's electoral commission says there is a surprising increase in the number of early votes, far surpassing this point in the 2010 election.

By 2pm on Friday, 244,623 people had cast their vote - up from 150,235 in 2010.

"It's a significant increase," Sue Lang from the VEC told AAP.

The 94,000 extra votes has prompted the VEC to urge Victorians only to vote early if absolutely necessary.

"Every person that goes into an early voting centre is asked their reason," Ms Lang said.

"If they say they could do it on election day but it's just convenient to do it today, we will turn them away."

Just over 220,000 people have presented at the centres and postal votes account for 24,299 votes so far.

Victorians go to the polls on November 29.
