A male driver has been left for dead after he crash a car with stolen number plates into another vehicle in Melbourne's southeast.

The man, aged in his 30s or 40s, received "life threatening injuries" after the blue Subaru Impreza he was driving crashed into a car and then a brick wall on Grange Road in Carnegie about 5am.

It is believed a male passenger of the Subaru fled the scene before police arrived, investigators have said.
