Vic driver fronts court over nurse's death

A young man accused of causing a fatal car crash and fleeing the scene while a much-loved cardiac nurse died, has fronted a Melbourne court.

Sebastian Kennett, 20, has been in custody since his arrest on Thursday, three days after the October 9 Oakleigh crash that killed nurse Lynda Hansen.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court was told on Monday that Kennett, who was supported in court by loved ones including a group of four young women, suffered a documented acquired brain injury.

It is alleged that Kennett stole a white Lexus valued at $60,000 before running a red light and smashing into Ms Hansen's hatchback.

He allegedly fled the scene, hid from police and was arrested days later following a police manhunt and an appeal for public information.

Kennett has been charged with culpable and dangerous driving causing Ms Hansen's death, failure to stop and failure to render assistance after a fatal collision, car theft, and disqualified driving.

On Monday the court ordered Kennett to submit to a saliva swab and a physical examination.

Kennett did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to reappear in court for a committal mention on March 9.

Police have also charged two men, allegedly with Kennett when he was arrested at a Blackburn South property.

A 21-year-old Glen Waverley man has been charged with harbouring a known offender, car theft, drug possession, and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

A 26-year-old Blackburn South man has also been charged with harbouring a known offender as well as weapons offences and outstanding warrants.
