Driver in Vic fatal crash remanded

A Melbourne man has been remanded in custody after allegedly crashing a stolen car into a minibus, killing two elderly women.

Michael Patrick Trueman, 23, is charged with a string of driving offences over the deaths of Katharina Nenstiel, 88, and Betty May Fox, 91, in a crash in Rosebud last week.

He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday and did not apply for bail.

Police allege Trueman stole a car in Coburg and drove to Rosebud, where he crashed head-on into a minibus carrying seven dementia patients.

Ms Nenstiel died at the scene, while Ms Fox died in hospital on Thursday.

Several other passengers were injured.

It is alleged that Trueman, of Coburg, had also been disqualified from driving at the time.

He has been remanded to reappear in court on November 26.

The court heard it was his first time in custody.

Trueman is charged with two counts of culpable driving, two counts of dangerous driving causing death, and one count of reckless driving, theft of motor car and driving while disqualified.
