Driver from Vic police chase faces court

A man is due to appear before a Melbourne court charged with 44 offences after two weeks on the run following a car chase in which two police vehicles were rammed.

Sean Paul Murphy, 26, is due to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday charged with 44 offences, including allegations he waved a fake gun at pedestrians during a police chase.

The 26-year-old, who was arrested on Friday, had allegedly been evading authorities since he abandoned his vehicle in Melbourne's CBD on March 29 following a police chase.

During an out-of-sessions hearing on Friday night, Sergeant Justin Mercovich said Murphy had waved what appeared to be a hand gun at pedestrians during the police pursuit.

"The accused has brazenly waved an imitation firearm with the intention of invoking fear," the policeman told the Friday night hearing.

Sgt Mercovich told the bail justice Murphy was an unacceptable risk as the 26-year-old was remanded into custody.

Police began pursuing Murphy's vehicle on March 29 after he allegedly drove into their vehicles when they tried to arrest him in Flemington over suspected drug trafficking.

The officers used a baton to smash Murphy's windscreen while yelling at him to stop and get out of the vehicle as he allegedly rammed their stationary vehicles.

Murphy was also pepper-sprayed but managed to drive away.

As police pursued Murphy through the CBD, he allegedly threw fistfuls of cash from his window.

Police on Friday said it took five officers to arrest the 26-year-old after they responded to a tip about a man seen packaging drugs in his car in West Melbourne.

Following Murphy's arrest, police allegedly seized syringes and drug trafficking paraphernalia from his car, as well as blood-filled syringes, a black imitation hand gun, $15,800 in cash, heroin, ice, ecstasy pills and jewellery suspected of being stolen.

One of the 44 charges against Murphy is for riot and affray at Ravenhall's Metropolitan Remand Centre on June 30.
