Newly-elected Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says he has a few people in mind to head the country's first royal commission into family violence.

Mr Andrews says he'll have discussions with possible candidates in the next few days.

"This is going to happen because more of the same policy will mean more of the same tragedy," he told ABC radio on Monday.

"I am convinced of that - the data tells you that.

"What's more, I've met too many people who've lived through the pain of family violence to be in any doubt about that."

The royal commission was one of Mr Andrews' pre-election promises.
