Melb woman's cheek ripped in dog attack

A Melbourne woman faces days in hospital after her cheek was ripped off during a fight with a man and his dog.

Emma McKnight, 37, was walking her dog in Frankston North on Sunday morning when a dog - described as a pit bull - launched itself at her dog.

"The dog must have just come out of the gate to go for my dog, so I shielded my dog, and it latched onto my arm at first, lock-jawed onto my arm," she told 3AW on Wednesday.

"I tried to get it off and it went for my face and ripped the cheek off."

Police say the dog's owner and Ms McKnight were involved in an altercation at the time, after which the owner, a 34-year-old man from Frankston North, was arrested and interviewed.

He is expected to be charged with assault and assault with a weapon, a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Ms McKnight said she needed 150 stitches in the right side of face and would remain in hospital for the next few days.

A Frankston Council spokeswoman said the man's unregistered dog was seized by the council an hour after the attack, and is being held in a secure animal pound facility.
