Dodgy Vic training companies knocked back

A training organisation bidding to offer online courses in Victoria had to be knocked back because it didn't even have a website.

It also tried to convince authorities it had a head office in Victoria, when it was actually based in Queensland.

A crackdown on dodgy training providers has seen Victoria cancel contracts for 20 organisations, saving about $43 million, since July 2015.

Another training provider was dumped after a departmental visit found it didn't have computers or the training documents necessary to offer disability, early childhood and management training.

The staff also couldn't prove they had any industry experience or qualifications.

More than 300 training providers have been offered Victorian government training contracts, which come with tough new performance targets.

"We're only offering contracts to providers who meet the toughest compliance criteria in the country," Skills Minister Gayle Tierney said on Friday.

Under the "Skills First" approach, which will come into effect in January, only courses most likely to lead to jobs will be supported.
