Derryn Hinch is deeply disappointed after finding his campaign van defaced in Melbourne today.

The Derryn Hinch Justice Party campaign caravan copped extensive damage, with a street sign hurled through its front windscreen.

"It's really disappointing because small parties, we don't have much money," Hinch told 9News.

"There's glass everywhere, every window is smashed. Somebody's torn the side mirror off ... you can't drive it without a side mirror.

"It's a big hurt."

The van was parked in Hampton, in Melbourne's south-east.

Police said a man was arrested shortly after witnesses allegedly saw him damaging the van just after 12.30pm today.

The 30-year-old St Kilda man has been charged with criminal damage, commit indictable offence whilst on bail and two counts of possessing items suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

It is expected the man will appear before court this afternoon where police will seek his remand.
