Vic's winds over, but heavy rains forecast

Damaging winds that battered Victoria will ease for a few days, before heavy rains bucket down on parts of the state come Sunday.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said heavy rains were predicted for the northeast over the weekend.

"Yesterday was mostly a wind event and it looks like on Sunday it will be more a precipitation event, strong winds are possible, but not like yesterday," he told AAP.

A strong cold front brought gale force winds to the state's south east on Tuesday but eased overnight and a severe weather warning was cancelled.

The strongest gust was recorded in Wilsons Promontory, blowing 122km/h, and in Mt Hotham the wind reached 121km/h.

A flash storm also hit Melbourne on Sunday.

State Emergency Service spokeswoman Jacquie Quaine said since the weekend, SES crews attended 2400 calls for help.

On Tuesday, 908 calls were logged with the SES, about 600 for trees down on roads and property.

Ms Quaine said with the rain forecast for the weekend, crews were preparing for further callouts.

"We're urging residents to prepare for it as well, especially if they've already got any damage to their property," she said.

Three men were hospitalised on Tuesday, two men were hit by tree branches, while a third suffered a wrist injury after being freed from a caravan when a tree crashed on to it in Dandenong.

Eight kayakers also needed to be rescued by life savers from waters off Anglesea after being swept out to sea.
