Vic prisoners may get less jail time

Prisoners still in lockdown more than two months after Victoria's worst prison riot are applying for sentence reductions.

But Corrections Victoria Commissioner Jan Shuard says time off to compensate for the lockdown at the Metropolitan Remand Centre, known as emergency management days, is not an entitlement and no application has been approved at this stage.

"No prisoners involved in the riot will be granted emergency management days," she said on Sunday.

Masked inmates armed with sticks smashed windows, bashed doors and lit fires at the maximum security facility during the June 30 riot, which was triggered by a statewide ban on smoking in prisons. The riot caused more than $10 million worth of damage.

No one has been charged but Ms Shuard says she has full confidence that the Victoria Police investigation will bring those who participated in the destruction to justice.

She says 85 per cent of repairs have been completed but prisoners still face some restrictions on their movements.

"We will have restrictions for the safety and security for the people in that prison for some time," she said.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the laws allowing prisoners to apply for reduced jail time over prison riots should be scrapped.

He said no prisoners, whether they were involved in the riots or not, should get a sentence reduction.
