Charging warning after Vic go-kart blaze

A disused indoor Melbourne go-kart centre went up in in a million-dollar blaze because someone left torches on charge, fire investigators have concluded.

Fun City Go Karts owner Darren Shaw says the blaze at the Sunshine North warehouse caused about a million dollars worth of damage, destroying laser tag equipment, a haunted house and other arcade paraphernalia.

He says there was "too much timber and no fire sprinklers" in the Sunshine North warehouse that was ravaged by fire on Tuesday night.

The MFB says electrical torches left charging sparked the blaze that took 80 firefighters more than two hours to control.

"MFB is urging the community to avoid incidents like these by never overcharging electrical items (and) never leaving items charging unattended," a spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

Mr Shaw closed the business last month and was in the process of moving equipment out of the building.

"Thank god all the very expensive stuff was out, still estimating over $1 million in mess, big day coming up," Mr Shaw posted online.

He thanked the "wonderful" emergency services for their help.

At the height of the blaze, nearby residents were urged to take shelter and close their doors and windows as smoke billowed.

Fun City also operates another go-kart complex at Shepparton.
