A kangaroo is lucky to be alive after it got caught in a swell and breaking waves in the ocean along Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The marsupial got in the water at Safety Beach about 5pm on Saturday before it came back to land where a person covered it in a blanket, but it hopped back into the surf.

It got into trouble in the swell and the breaking waves and went under a couple of times. Two police officers then jumped in the water and carried the unconscious kangaroo to shore.

The officers resuscitated the kangaroo, wrapped it in a blanket and took it to the station to be checked by an expert.

"The roo is currently being cared for but is said to be in good spirits and lucky to be alive given the amount of salt water he inhaled, thanks to his rescuers," police said on Sunday.
