Controversial Vic protest laws to be axed

Controversial Victorian anti-protest laws are set to be repealed, one year after they were introduced.

The move-on laws were introduced in 2014 under the previous coalition government, giving police the power to move protesters on during blockades.

Labor promised to repeal the laws, saying they stifled dissent and outlawed peaceful protests.

The bill has passed its second reading in the upper house and is due to have its third and final reading on Thursday.

Attorney-General Martin Pakula said police already have the power to move people on for breaching the peace, endangering or likely endangering life or property, or risking public safety.
