Congestion cleared at Melbourne hot spot

One of Melbourne's worst level crossings has been removed.

Burke Road has reopened to traffic in Glen Iris without boom gates for the first time.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the removal of the crossing will make it quicker, easier and safer for motorists.

"They caused congestion, they put lives at risk and now we've removed them," Mr Andrews told reporters on Wednesday.

The boom gates were down for up to 40 minutes between 7am and 9am causing queues on the Monash Freeway.

The opposition says they funded the removal of the Glen Iris level crossing in the 2014-15 Budget.

"On 27 August 2014 EOIs were announced for $659 million in works for the removal of four more level crossing - including Burke Road - with construction to begin mid-2015," the opposition said in a statement.
