Commonwealth to appeal Vic terror sentence

The Commonwealth will appeal a decade-long prison sentence handed down to Anzac Day terror plot teen Sevdet Besim .

The 19-year-old was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment last month by the Supreme Court of Victoria for doing acts in preparation for, or planning a terrorist act.

It was alleged the Hallam teenager planned to kill a police officer during Anzac Day commemorations in 2015.

The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions confirmed on Tuesday that they had lodged a Notice of Appeal in the matter describing the sentence as "manifestly inadequate".

"Where the CDPP is of the view that the sentence imposed is manifestly inadequate and that such an appeal would be in the public interest, it will institute an appeal - as is in this case," a statement on the CDPP website says.

The appeal against the sentence will be heard by the Victorian Court of Appeal at a date yet to be fixed.

Besim pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to do an act in preparation for or planning a terror act - a charge that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

He was handed a 10-year jail sentence and must serve at least seven-and-a-half before he is eligible for parole.
