Rain and strong winds hit Victoria

The start to a cold snap in Victoria has delivered heavy rain and damaging winds to most parts of the state.

The SES received 220 calls statewide in the 24 hours to Friday evening, with fallen trees causing most concern.

They will be on alert over the next few days as more destructive winds and threats of flooding arise.

Heavy rains drenched parts of Melbourne late Thursday and Friday, with many dealing with a wet commute on their way home at the end of the working week.

Mount Hotham received the heaviest rainfall, with 114mm falling in the past 24 hours.

Alpine areas have also been struggling with warmer than usual weather, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

"Temperatures around that time have been well above zero so in those alpine areas it has been falling as rain, not as snow, which is not helping the flood situation," senior forecaster Michael Efron told AAP.

Areas of the north east of Victoria are on flood watch, including the upper Murray river.

Rain will start to turn to snow in low-lying areas during the evening and early hours of Saturday as temperatures plummet.

"Places like the Grampians, Macedon Ranges could see some snow falls into tomorrow," Mr Efron said.

After highs of 18C, Melbourne will shiver through the weekend, with tops of 12C expected on Saturday and Sunday.

Relief from the severe weather isn't in sight for a number of days, as the state welcomes a series of cold fronts during the weekend.

Heavy rain and cold weather are expected early on Saturday, again on Sunday and in the second half of Monday, the Bureau says.

The SES is advising people to secure any loose items and for drivers to stay clear of flood waters.
