UPDATE: Charred body and fire accelerant found near train tracks in St Kilda East

Police are investigating after a man's badly burnt body and a container of accelerant were found next to train tracks in St Kilda East.

Homicide and arson squad detectives were called to the scene after a passer-by found the body along the Sandringham train line near Alma Park at 6.30am this morning.

The body was found still smouldering when police arrived and a container of accelerant was found in the vicinity.

The park backs on to The Christian Brothers College, one of Melbourne’s most prestigious schools.

Students are being told to go straight to school, to stay in the school grounds and not venture out into the park today while the investigation continues.

A cyclist, who chose to remain anonymous, told Fairfax Media the area was popular for "train surfing", a practice claiming two other lives in the same area.

Police would not comment on the possibility of the man being a train surfer or vandal.

The Sandringham train line has been suspended between Elsternwick and South Yarra and police are expected to be at the scene until 1pm.
