CFMEU bosses face Melbourne court

Two senior Victorian CFMEU officials will need to wait until August to find out if blackmail charges against them will proceed.

Thirteen days have been reserved for a pre-trial committal hearing from May 7, 2018 if John Setka and Shaun Reardon fail in their bid to have the charges quashed.

The matter is listed again for special mention on August 30 once a decision has been made by the Supreme Court of Victoria.

State secretary Setka and assistant secretary Reardon have been charged with blackmailing Boral executives Paul Dalton and Peter Head in April 2013.

The two men appeared in Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday to lock in the committal hearing dates.

Reardon's barrister told the Supreme Court last month the alleged offences were not criminal acts and had occurred in the context of an industrial dispute.

In November last year, Setka's barrister Robert Richter QC claimed the charges were "invalid" and called for them to be quashed.
