CCTV shows moment at centre of assault claim between Victorian Liberal MPs

CCTV footage of an interaction at the centre of an assault claim involving two prominent Victorian Liberal MPs has surfaced.

Moira Deeming has filed a police complaint alleging former party leader Matthew Guy assaulted her during a community event in Melbourne in May.

Guy vehemently denies allegations he assaulted Deeming at a Macedonian youth function in Sunshine West on May 23.

Video of the interaction between the pair is being investigated by police, who received the complaint from Deeming on June 16.

The footage shows the two Liberal MPs sitting at a table and leaning in towards each other, before Guy appears to place his arm on Deeming’s back.

Opposition Leader Jess Wilson, who is in the middle of a five-week publicity blitz through every electorate ahead of November’s state election, failed to front the media on Thursday over the allegations, instead offering a brief statement.

“This matter is now with Victoria Police and it would be inappropriate for me to comment further,” Wilson said.

“Like every other Victorian, the parties involved deserve due process, the presumption of innocence and their privacy respected while this is investigated.

“I remain focused on issues that matter to Victorians and earning their trust so our state can have a fresh start in November.”

The Labor Party, meanwhile, had plenty of questions for the opposition leader.

“These are matters Jess Wilson should come forward and must answer as a matter of urgency,” Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny said.

“It certainly raises a number of really serious questions for Jess Wilson, the leader of the opposition, and, as I have asked this morning, when did Jess Wilson first become aware of these allegations?

“Has Jess Wilson referred these allegations to the Parliamentary Integrity Committee? Has she referred these allegations to Victoria Police?

“Are the subjects of these allegations members of her shadow cabinet, and if they are, is it appropriate that they remain in that position? 

“If these subjects of the allegations are members of her caucus, is it appropriate that the alleged offender sits in her party room?“
