Wet weather and speed may have contributed to dramatic smash

Police continue to investigate a dramatic crash in Melbourne overnight, when a young driver’s car lost control and flipped.

Authorities said the 20-year-old driver was attempting to overtake another vehicle in heavy rain on Dynon Road, West Melbourne, around 3am when he lost control of the car.

Video, which captured the crash, shows the vehicle leave the road and flipping, before knocking down several trees.

“I came to work, and saw the car upside down,” witness Alan Chen said.

The driver, an Indian student on an international licence, and his 17-year-old passenger were able to crawl away from the wreckage.

Sergeant Shayne Bannard told 9NEWS the pair were not seriously injured and were not taken to hospital.

“They’re very lucky… with something like this, it could be a matter of inches completely changing the outcome,” Sgt Bannard said.

Police have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing to the crash, but continue to investigate whether speed or inclement weather were factors.

The student behind the wheel could face careless driving charges.

“We need people to drive to the conditions, not just the speed limit,” Sgt Bannard said.

Locals told 9NEWS sections of Dynon Road often flood.

“I reckon it’s a bit dangerous,” one man said.

Melbourne had persistent showers overnight and into the morning, receiving 11.4mm of rain up to 9am.
