The occupants of a home in Melbourne's north have escaped harm when a car parked "perilously close" to the house was deliberately set on fire.

Emergency services were called to the Harold Street property in Thornbury about 10.50pm on Thursday (AEST) to find the Mazda 3 on fire in the driveway.

Police said a device had been thrown through the car's rear passenger window, causing irreparable damage.

Three occupants of the house were home at the time, but were not injured.
