Victoria wants more female firefighters.

The state's Country Fire Authority has issued a call for fit, active women looking for a career change.

In southeast Melbourne on May 9, women can try some of the physical challenges of the recruitment process and don the protective clothing worn on the job.

Some women firefighters will be on hand at the information session in Bangholme to talk about their front-line experiences.

CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson says he hopes women will be equally represented in the CFA in the future.

The CFA said there were currently only 20 women employed as career firefighters among its workforce of 700.

Career firefighters work alongside volunteer members at some of Victoria's busiest fire stations in outer Melbourne and regional centres.
