Booze, weapons, smokes found in Vic jails

Syringes, weapons, drugs and more than 450 litres of home brew are just a few of the 11,000 items that were smuggled into Victoria's prisons in the past nine months.

Following a smoking ban last year, almost 60 per cent of contraband seizures were smoking-related, with 6500 prisoners or visitors caught with tobacco, matches, lighters and other smoking paraphernalia between July 2015 and March 2016, the state government said on Saturday.

Prisoners caught with contraband face disciplinary measures, while visitors caught smuggling items inside are banned from visiting the state's prisons.
