Bollards will line AFL grand final parade

Anti-terror bollards will line the AFL grand final parade route and other thoroughfares leading to the MCG as Victoria Police ramp up security for footy's big day.

But there is no specific terrorism threat, authorities insist.

Forklifts are set to descend upon Melbourne overnight on Thursday to position temporary concrete bollards along the route of the grand final parade, Victoria Police confirmed.

"For those coming to the parade ... you will see physical barriers," Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said.

"It's both to keep the crowds safe, and the players who are making themselves available for that day, well and truly safe."

Thousands of officers will also be deployed during celebrations.

"You'll see police everywhere, from the time you get off a train at Flinders Street, or off a tram, you'll see police everywhere," Police Minister Lisa Neville said.
