BMW impounded for doing 160 in an 80 zone

A 33-year-old man has had the BMW he was driving impounded after police allegedly clocked him doing twice the speed limit in Melbourne's west.

The car was detected speeding at 160km/h in an 80km/h zone in Ardeer at about 9.30pm on Sunday, police say.

The 2007 BMW, which belonged to the car's passenger, has been impounded for 30 days.

The driver, from Cairnlea, will be charged on summons with speeding.

Victoria Police say Operation Roadwise has since December 13 detected more than 20,000 traffic offences including more than 1100 drunk and drugged drivers.

Operation Roadwise ends on Sunday.
