Blue-green algae prompts warning in Vic

Blue-green algae discovered in a basin in the Victoria's north has prompted a warning for any campers and holiday makers in the region for the long weekend.

High levels of the algae is present in the Waranga Basin, 45 km away from Shepparton and authorities are urging people to stay away from the water.

"Do not swim in affected areas or use water for cooking, drinking, washing or showering. Boiling the water will not make it safe," Victorian authorities said.

Direct contact with contaminated water can cause skin irritation, sore eyes, ears and nose. If swallowed the algae can cause cramps, nausea and vomiting.

Pets and livestock can also be at risk if drink the contaminated and fisherman should rinse and clean any fish caught in the area thoroughly, and discard organs. Mussels, crayfish and yabbies should not be eaten.
