Lucky escape for diners after car crashes into Melbourne restaurant

Diners eating at a restaurant in Melbourne's south-east have had a lucky escape after a car ploughed through the front window last night.

Emergency services were called to the Lobster Cave seafood restaurant in Beaumaris about 8.45pm, following reports of a crash involving a white sedan.

Police said a 77-year-old man accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake before mounting the curb and hitting the diner.

Several people inside the restaurant suffered minor injuries but did not require treatment.

In a social media post, the seafood outlet described the incident as awful and shocking.

"We have had an incident. Thank goodness no one was hurt," they said.

"One table was inches away from the impact.

"All customers were immediately vacated, most didn't even get to eat dinner, all produce is going in the bin and our team are now cleaning up."
