A baby girl made a grand entrance when she was born in a car on a Melbourne freeway overnight.

The baby's parents were headed to the Royal Women's Hospital about 9.30pm on Saturday night when the baby decided she didn't want to wait any longer.

The baby's dad began delivering her in the vehicle on the Western Ring Road before paramedics arrived.

"Dad assisted in the birth until the arrival of our MICA paramedics, who were first to arrive on scene," an Ambulance Victoria spokesman told AAP.

"Both mum and daughter were in a stable condition and they were taken to the Royal Women's."
