Family of Australian teen missing in Canada remain hopeful he is safe

A Victorian teen reported missing in Canada may have run out of money before abandoning his hotel room and belongings, according to police.

Jake Kermond, 19, was reported missing by hotel staff in the ski-resort town of Whistler on April 30, when they discovered his room apparently abandoned.

Mr Kermond, from Harrietville in Alpine Victoria, had been skiing in Whistler since early March and was last seen by staff on April 26.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Staff Sergeant Steve LeClair doesn't believe the teen met foul play, and suspects he was short on cash.

"(Foul play) is unlikely - the area here is not known for that type of activity and there is no indication or evidence that he has met with foul play," Sgt LeClair told 3AW radio on Thursday.

"One possibility could be that he has just abandoned his belongings in his hotel room and has gone travelling, even though it would be strange for him to do that."

The teen's mother, Natalie Raymond, said she did not know why she couldn't get in touch with her son but said she was hopeful he would be found safe.

She said Australian authorities had been in regular contact since he was reported missing and that the family were "sitting tight and waiting".

Canadian police have been in contact with Mr Kermond's parents in Australia, but they have not heard from him since he was reported missing.

Sgt LeClair said there had been no activity on Mr Kermond's bank accounts, and his phone and social media accounts were being monitored by police.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the man's family.
