Attenborough backs new Vic national park

Sir David Attenborough has weighed into the Victorian election, calling for a new national park to ensure the survival of the Leadbeater's Possum.

Sir David has joined with 30 conservation groups to highlight the plight of the endangered possum, which is Victoria's faunal emblem.

"The maintenance of an intact ecological system is the only way to ensure the continued existence of biodiversity, safeguard water supplies and provide spiritual nourishment for ourselves and future generations," the internationally renowned naturalist and documentary maker said.

"It is for these reasons, and for the survival of the critically endangered Leadbeater's Possum, that I support the creation of the Great Forest National Park for Victoria."

The park would protect a further 355,000 hectares and encompass several existing national parks and reserves in the forested region north-east of Melbourne.

The Australian Conservation Foundation, Victorian National Park Association and the Royal Society of Victoria are among supporters.

Major political parties are being urged to signal their support for the new park ahead of the November 29 state election.
